Nikon Digital ICE
This is what the image looks like without using Digital ICE. All the damage on the original negative can clearly be seen. It would take a great deal of time and effort with a graphics editing package to achieve the same standard as the Digital ICE. In fact, I very much doubt that manual editing could ever come close to what can be achieved by pressing one button on the scanner.
ICE is an acronym for Image Correction and Enhancement, and is designed to reduce the effects of dust and scratches on negatives and slides. As you can see from this demonstration, it is very effective.
